Ferry booked
« on: April 02, 2022, 11:11:52 AM »
The Mrs and myself were booked to go on a wine week in the Loire Valley, France in 2020. Due to the dreaded C19 causing havoc this got put back to 2021 and then finally it's going ahead this September. In the meantime Easy Jet have pulled out of Newcastle Airport meaning there is no easy way to get there for the wine group (we were going to fly to Geneva and then get a bus over the border as it's not far). The latest plan is to get the train to Lyon (Newcastle to London, London to Paris & Paris to Lyon) and then the bus back up to Malfretaz. That didn't seem like a lot of fun so I'm going on the bike ! i'm booked up on the North Shields - Ijmuden ferry which is about 12 miles from my door. I'm planning to have a gentle trundle through 'olland, Luxembourg & Belgium, stopping off at Waterloo to have a mooch about there. A very steady two days there and two back to the ferry means I can keep off the motorways and explore the smaller, more interesting roads. As a bonus I've just realised that the French round of the World Superbikes is on the Sunday I'm due to start heading home and it's only 120 miles away from where I'm staying so I may just loop by there and catch up with some racing. Just need the weather now, fingers crossed.

Myself & the mrs were supposed to go to Euro Disney April 2020 but as with you covid put payed to that.  We are now booked to do October half term ( hopefully I will be walking ok by then ?)  I like that you are now going to go by bike and it sounds like a great trip, and yes what a bonus you may get to see some brilliant racing with the world superbikes 🤞. The only drawback I can see is you will not be able to bring lots of bottles of wine back, but I am sure you will get to drink some whilst you are there  lol. Fingers crossed for you mate with the weather and everything   :thumb:

That sounds like an excellent trip on the bike.
Enjoy Euro Disney, I'm sure you'll be up & walking well by then!
Yes, the virus has caused quite a few travel problems!!  :groan: One of our trips for 2020 was to go to Normandy to 'do' the beaches, museums & cemeteries. We booked the tunnel but that obviously got cancelled. We couldn't get our money back because I only booked the 'cheap' ticket but they gave us a voucher for the same amount. I had to renew the voucher in June last year, which is good until June this year, however we have got four trips in the UK planned now, some on the bike, some in the car, so it looks as if I'll be renewing the voucher for another 12 months!

I have to confess that the Normandy beaches & memorials is on the 'to do' list. It's quite near the top of what is becoming a long list...

We have 'done' Normandy twice before but it's always worth another one.  :thumb:
Belgium and the WW1 sites are also worth a look.

Time permitting I might try and check out some WW1 sites in Belgium this year. Also weather dependent too...

If you do manage to get to Belgium then you must get to the Menin Gate in Ypres. At 20.00 every evening there is a ceremony where the local Fire Service play the last Post. A big crowd gathers so get there early for best position.  :thumb:
Plenty to see in Ypres itself & loads around & about too.
