Hi I was wondering what were people’s thoughts on E10 petrol ?
My bikes seem to run ok on it ( I do use Red X in every 2nd tankful ) my concern is over the winter when I park them up I usually fill all the petrol tanks brim full.
Just don’t know enough about this E10 petrol like will it last the few months while the bikes are parked up for the winter or will it go off ?
I would appreciate your views
-
As far as I know the Ethanol part of the fuel is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture through the fuel tank breather over the winter. This will then settle and could cause rust in metal parts. I will be filling up with some 'posh' fuel like Shell V Power before the bike goes to bed for the winter and topping it up with a dose of fuel stabiliser (Putolene is a favourite of mine). I do this every year and the bike always feels fresh & ready to go come spring time.
-
Northumbryan thank you for your reply yes a top up of premium fuel is a great idea before they go to bed for the winter I have never used a fuel stabiliser before but I think I will be looking in to it.
I have never put posh fuel in any of my bikes before just to tight I think lol
-
I've noticed my tigger doesn't seem quite as sharp when it's got E10 in the tank, not massively different just a little 'flatter' at times.
-
I'm doing similar.
The bike does get a bit of use over the winter months, I quite like those cold but sunny days for a ride. I just try to avoid the days after a frost when the salt goes down.
I'm not altogether convinced it's as bad a problem as some people make out but for a few extra pounds I just don't think it's worth taking the risk?
At the end of this month the tank will be filled with 'quality grade' petrol, run down and then refilled with the same just in case it has to stand for a couple of months.

I will be laying up the VX800 for the winter and maybe the NC750 and just ride the KTM when it's not snowy, salty or wet (so maybe never).
I'll fill the tank with Esso Supreme as it does not (at present) contain Ethanol and yes I do pour in some "Stabil" fuel stabiliser. I don't know if this does any good but I'm just doing my best. Fingers crossed the Fuel shortages are not a problem soon and I can actually go and fill up some jerry cans and fill up at home.
-
Hi Brockett sounds good very similar to all the other members good luck let’s hope they all start and run properly in the spring 🤞
-
I've just ordered some Putolene from a well known auction site for my Tigger. I was going to go out on it today but I've got tendonitis in my Achilles and I can hardly walk. Not nice, I can tell you...
-
:broken: not nice. I hope you feel better soon.
-
My mate Davey's top trumped me with a DVT in his leg. I thought mine was painful... Cheers Brockett :thumb:
-
Both sound a bit painful, hope you're both better soon.
Is this the stuff I need?

That's exactly what's going in my bike. The question is when ? The weather is holding out quite well and I'm out today with Morpethmatt. Hopefully, there may be many more runs to come before the dreaded salt hits the roads...
-
I have just ordered the exact same thing.
I haven’t used any of my bikes for a few weeks as I have had some biopsies done on my prostrate and are waiting for the results.
-
Best of luck with those, I hope all is well :thumb:
-
Thank you :thumb:
-
That's exactly what's going in my bike. T
Thanks for the confirmation.....ordered. :thumb:
-
I have had some biopsies done on my prostrate and are waiting for the results.
Here's hoping all goes well. :thumb:
Managed to avoid the biopsies up to now.......just some 'probing'!! :shy:
-
Just an update I had my biopsies result yesterday and they found no sign of cancer 😁
Obviously I am over the moon with that news :thumb:
I now have to have an operation to reduce the size of my prostate ( which is the size of a cricket ball ) and a few weeks ago I had a long term catheter fitted (12 weeks then change to another)
Hence not being able to ride a bike as not at all comfortable!!!!!
-
Fantastic news, get well soon :thumb:
-
Thank you :thumb:
-
Tank brimmed, fuel stabiliser added so that could well be my last run of the year. Getting to early November with no salt on the roads is pretty good. I'll still be out if we get any really nice day however.
-
they found no sign of cancer 😁
Excellent news!! Hope the rest of the procedure goes well.
Off out today to get rid of some of the E10 in the tank, might need another outing to empty it  then I'll be filling it with some 'good stuff' adding the stabiliser & hopeful it will do for the rest of the winter.
-
:Thank you mick :thumb:
Sounds like a great plan :thumb:
-
Unfortunately only used half a tank  which means another outing is required. :thumb:
-
I'm pretty certain you'll know of a breakfast venue 1/4 of a thankful away. And an E5-selling petrol station on the homebound leg.
-
Rusty, oddly enough I have one in mind. They do one of the best breakfasts around (not the cheapest, but real quality). Normally, it's too close to home (20 mins), either going out or returning, to call in on the bike, however, if I take the long way round...............
-
That is unfortunate mick having to go out for another run to use the rest of the E10 petrol up lol
And having to sample another breakfast
And Rusty you know mick so well lol
-
Just as a side note, my mate was speaking to a tanker delivery driver last week and he reckons there's hardly any Ethanol in petrol at the moment as it's in short supply ? E1 ?
-
Oh really that’s interesting good to keep an eye on that :thumb:
3 of my bikes tanks are almost empty so I can fill up some Jerry cans with some premium fuel for them, but as I am not able to ride the KTM at the moment the tank is still pretty full of E10 I was thinking I will take a look at trying to syphon the fuel out.
-
One of my mates has a lot of two stroke Kawasaki triples and he bleeds the fuel & oil systems down over winter so they are completely dry. On his four stroke bikes he always tops the tank up and adds fuel stabiliser. Curious, we all have our winter rituals.
-
Cor I would love lots of Kawasaki triples I had a KH 250 back in the day wish I had it now :)))
I did manage to go put on the KTM after work for a few miles as it was 14 degrees to use up some of the E10 petrol :thumb:
I have been out with my mate tonight and told him about trying to use the petrol up he suggested that I syphon the petrol out completely then run them until they stop?
As my wife has a petrol car that she uses daily I thought I could put the E10 petrol in there ?
-
Not a bad plan, I assume the fuel injection will be self-priming so it should just re-pressurise itself in the spring ? I don't think I've ran a fuel injected bike out of fuel now I come to think about it. I know diesels can be the devils work to re-prime if they run dry but I've not heard anything bad about FI ?
-
Do you think there's any concern of the Cinnamon Swirle in the bottom of the tank getting disturbed too much if you empty the tank? I try to fill mine, a good bit, before any indication comes on to say it's low.
In fact I've been thinking (dangerous I Know) that I might have to have an extra trip out on mine now, one to get the fuel a bit lower, fill with 'super', then another to get rid of half that, ready to re-fill with 'super' before I put the stabiliser in.
-
Play it safe, Mick. Breakfast at home.
-
I'm always wary of disturbing the lower contents of a fuel tank. I ran an old Z1000 dry once and it never ran right again ! It was always bunging one or more of the carbs up and I just couldn't get the tank clean despite it looking clean.
-
Mick B and NorthumBryan that is a great shout and makes perfect sense :thumb:
What I think I will do is syphon some out but leave 1 or 2 bars then fill with premium fuel and stabiliser.
Thank you for you input :thumb:
-
yesterday after work I went to find a garage that sold some premium petrol I ended up driving 9 miles to find one that didn’t only sell E10 & Diesel ( I do live in the sticks) I found a BP and got my 20 litre Jerry can out and was robbed of £30 at £165.9 per litre ( how much !!!!!)
To add insult to injury I found that the Jerry can no longer sealed and I had to drive home as careful as I could but quite a bit spilled out so now I have a car that smells so strongly of petrol and at £165.9 per litre I could have cried.
Anyway I used the premium petrol to top up both the KTM & the B-King and will go out with again with a few standard plastic cans and get robbed again !!!!
-
Went out today to run off the last of the E10 in the tank. Filled it up with Esso Synergy Supreme +99 & got robbed for 158.9 litre!!! (I am now happy I'm not the only one that got caught (Asmith :shy:0).
However I had a little ride after filling up & I found that my mpg went up from around 60mpg ('normal riding' earlier) to around 70mpg! (on the display).
I had a 'little moment' on a bit of dual carriageway (a private road of course) where I pushed it a bit and held it at 6k rpm for a mile or so in 6th & saw 65mpg on the display. I don't think the extra mpg will account for the extra £'s per litre but I also thought the bike felt better, so now it's decision time.....do I keep running on it or save my hard earned?
The next thing I need to ask is do I put the additive in with this petrol. Reading the write ups it sounds as though it may not be needed. Plus, I'm sure the bike wont stand for more than a a couple of months max. before it gets a run. That would be at least 1/2 a tank or more, & of course I would fill up with a 'premium' petrol.
-
Mick B……… now that is very interesting that your bike seemed to run better I am not surprised really, but as you said do we bite the bullet and start to run on the premium fuel
Myself the Scrooge in me says no lol….. but never say never.
As with your question about the additive I would think it will not be needed while using the oh so expensive premium fuel
Good luck with it all :thumb:
-
It's odd. A couple of years ago I did a little test, 3 tanks of what was E5, 3 tanks of premium & 3 tanks of supermarket petrol (E5) and just did my normal things on the bike. I didn't think there was much difference between them all. A couple of mpg more on the premium, and it was a couple, but I didn't think there was anything different about the 'feel' of the engine.
However with that Esso stuff I was pretty sure I felt a difference & not just with the mpg.
Interestingly since I've been using E10, the good lady has asked, on a couple of occasions, "what gear are you in?" and when I said "why" she has responded that she thought the bike was vibrating more than it does for the speed we were 'cruising' at. (I hadn't noticed anything)
She hasn't been on the back since I filled up the other day so I'm not going to tell her about my thoughts & see if she mentions it again. vrrr
-
A few years ago I was out on the b-king and needed some fuel and went in to a shell garage and the unleaded pumps were all out of order so I had to fill up with the shell premium at the time ( I cannot remember the name ) but it was more money per litre I didn’t think anything at the time but I remember the ride home the bike seemed much more responsive.
No I have had the b-king 10 years now and bought it new, when I next use it I will see how it rides with the premium fuel in.
And the same with the KTM I have only used E10 in it so far but now it is full with the premium I will see how that rides.
As I said in my previous post I will take some cans to fill with premium for the other bikes but I will go and find a Esso garage and try there good stuff.
With the Triumph Trophy I will turn the fuel off after topping up then drain the carbs down.
It will be interesting to see if your wife notices any difference when she is next on the back maybe you will let us know ?

Watching this with interest, salt on the roads in Northumberland now after last nights heavy frost (boo) so I'll probably not be out now until next year.
-
I was saying to my wife only today as there were lots of bikes out as the weather here was 14 degrees and bone dry and still no sign of salt and how it was typical that I was not able to ride at the moment 😩😩
So I feel for you NorthumBryan 😩
-
Perfect day for riding here as well. But ... had the Mother in Law over for dinner then a few hours at the local sports hall for one of the grandkid's birthday party.
Getting colder this week but hopefully staying dry so I'll get the heated jackets out ready! :thumb:
-
Mick B
Very important that you did both of those things :thumb:
Let’s hope it stays dry for you and you manage to get out on the bike and maybe even breakfast :thumb:

Confused.com
Had a run out this afternoon and covered about 60 miles. As soon as I set off the display was showing 62mpg!! And that was the best I saw all day!!
How could it drop from 70mpg the other day (65mpg when I opened it up a touch for a mile or so) to around 60 mpg today.
Granted I was 2 up but being 2 up previously has never made that sort of difference, maybe a mile or two mpg but that's it.
Both rides (other than the little blast) were done at normal speeds & throttle actions to my usual riding style.
Is it possible that the ECU was initially confused with the new Super the other day and once switched off, then back on today 'reset' it?
I did however still think it was running better, not as in faster or better acceleration but just smoother. As per my previous post, I didn't say anything to Deb about my thoughts until we were a few miles from home. I had tried to replicate what I thought she was asking about, speed/gears/rpm by swapping about a bit. She remembered asking me the question about 'what gear I was in' and suggested today that she never noticed anything untoward.
Although in my mind I do think there is a difference in running I also think it's in my head, trying to convince myself the cost of the 'super' was worth it. :smirk:
-
I'm sure Sigmund would have a theory about this...
-
Filled it up again today & just after setting off I saw 90mpg on the display, dropping to 80 then 70 which it was still on when I arrived home a couple of miles later.
I reset the trip each time I fill up & although I have never noticed before (it's usually on the miles travelled rather than the mpg) and it must be some form of electrical trickery resetting the mpg as well, just wonder why it takes so long to settle to the correct reading?
Anyway, I have read that the Esso Synergy Supreme has no Ethanol in it so should be fine to stand for a while if necessary. Although it isn't Ethanol free in all parts of the country.....
Quote..... "Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 contains zero ethanol, except (for logistics reasons) sites supplied from Scotland, North Wales, North England and Cornwall".
My minimal testing also leads me to believe that it's good for an extra 2-3 mpg!!
-
Hi mick glad you are still getting out for a ride :thumb:
The only bike that has a display on is the KTM and I haven’t really played with any of the settings yet so I cannot really comment on the MPG etc.
Perhaps you are right it must be electrical trickery lol
It’s great to hear that Esso synergy supreme contains no Ethanol so that is what I will be filling my cans up with so thank you for that :thumb:
I like the idea of better MPG with the premium fuel
I filled my car up tonight on the way home £150.9 for diesel ( what the f**k is going on )
He also gave me a leaflet on a new type of fuel called Aspen I have added a picture of the leaflet
-
I paid 159.9L for that Esso today, up a penny from the other day!!! :wtf:
The Esso E10 at the same garage was 145.9, so 14p difference, for a full tank (20l) that's less than £3.00 per tank! I usually fill up between half & quarter full so I might not notice it as much...
Still, got to look after the pension pot, for the beer, breakfasts & cakes!! lol
-
Hmmm, I had to top the car up on Ethanol free electricity @ 35p per kW tonight. That's 40kW for £14 or about 160 miles for the price of two gallons of diesel...
-
Mick B I agree if you fill up from half & quarter you might not notice it so much but as you say you need to look after the pension pot for your breakfasts etc lol lol
NorthumBryan just wondering how does the MG compare to the leaf that you had?
When you compare the numbers like that maybe going electric seems worth looking in to ?
-
Being a little cynical about the 'big change' to electric vehicles I have to wonder, will it be that cheap when all or even most vehicles are electric?
Where will the government get the tax/fuel duty from?
Not sure how accurate this is but I bet it's not far from correct................
The two main categories of road fuel – ultra-low sulphur petrol and ultra-low sulphur diesel – are charged duty at 57.95p per litre.
When VAT is included, tax represents just over 60% of the final pump price for petrol and diesel.
With the average petrol motorist said to spend an average of £1,042 on petrol each year, fuel duties amount to a tax charge of around £600 per year, per motorist.
In 2019/20 fuel duty tax receipts in the United Kingdom amounted to approximately £27.57 billion British pound. This was significantly more than the £21 billion raised by alcohol and tobacco duties combined.
-
It's a good point about taxation because at the moment there is no road fund tax on EV's and obviously no fuel tax. This is an issue worldwide as if you stick the duty on electricity it impacts everyone, including those that don't have an EV ? I suspect that to 'encourage' us all into EV's fuel duty will continue to rise along with road tax and eventually EV's will pay an annual tax, probably a lot higher than current road tax to replace the fuel duty, who knows ? There is a scheme in Australia where they plan to charge $5,000 Aussie dollars upfront at the point of purchase to cover the electric vehicles lifetime of road use ? Might be an answer but it's hardly going to encourage people into EV's and out of diesel & petrol cars is it ?
I don't normally pay as much as 35p per kW as I usually charge at home for 5p per kW on the cheap rate overnight (12:30 till 04:30) or 'directly' from the PV if it's sunny for free. As the garage is still 'in progress' I'm (and the Mrs) having to use public chargers ranging from 27p to 50p, although I normally have a McBreakfast while I charge if I use the 50p one.
The MG is definitely a step up from the Zoe, the extra space alone makes a huge difference and the size & weight means it rides a lot more smoothly and comfortably over what Northumberland County Council insist are roads... The little features that make the difference are things like auto-hold (press the brake at a stop and it puts the car into 'park' and applies the handbrake, touch the accelerator & just go), the DAB radio (Planet Rock all the way) and the heater works - really well ! Couple that with an excellent reversing camera and it's a nice package. Interestingly, it's getting the same 4 miles per kW of the Zoe in a bigger, more powerful car. Happy with it thus far :thumb:
