Title: Power lines
Post by: Asmith61 on April 26, 2023, 05:50:21 PM
They are doing the power lines and checking the pylons round our way some amazing scaffolding going up all over the place.

It looks like they are getting ready to reconductor (new wires +) or refurbish (new insulators, conductor clamps and landing plates) the tower line. There is a lot of reinforcement work going on at the moment to accommodate the hundreds of renewable energy projects springing up around the UK at the moment. Looks like a National grid 275kV line, could be getting an upgrade to 400kV as there is a bit of that going on at the moment?

NorthumBryan I knew you would know exactly they were doing, we are surrounded by pylons and we have had summit (Green lorries with trailers with what looks like huge matting) which I believe is for the vehicles to drive on to the fields ? If there is not a gateway to get to the pylons they have taken the hedges out looks like a huge job.
About 5 miles from us is a huge power sub station which recently has had what looks like green 20 foot containers there must be 20 or more, my wife drives past them everyday to and from work, we wondered if they are huge batteries?

Sounds very much like a battery or BESS (battery energy storage system) as they are containerised and quite anonymous. The country needs about 93GWh of storage just to run for 24 hours, so expect to see a lot more in the future

Nice one  :thumb:

If you go to Google Maps and drop in these coordinates (56.480363, -3.012414) it will take you to a 49.9MW BESS in Dundee that my company developed and sold off to Eel Power. It's fully built now, but you get an idea of how tightly packed the sites are. You need a little bit of elbow room between containers for maintenance & air circulation.

Ok I will take a look 👍

These are the pictures my wife took this morning ( not brilliant quality as she took them as we were driving )
