Title: Electric stand-up scooters
Post by: NorthumBryan on March 15, 2022, 08:28:16 AM
just to set you all a scene, so last night I'm heading home from Morpeth Railway station and I'm doing 30 mph in a 30 mph zone and a yoof on an electric stand up scooter breezed past me ! I guess the scooter was travelling at about 36/37 mph and obviously no helmet was being worn. No lights, no sound, no helmet, dressed in black from head to toe and virtually invisible in the failing light. Now that's a recipe for disaster - you can't hear it or see it. Madness.

Omg 😳
It’s not until you see such a thing for yourself that you realise just how dangerous they are especially with no lights, no helmet, and dressed all in black and probably with his hood up !!
There must be a law against them being used in this manner ?
I would have thought it was like you must have lights on a push bike if being used in the dark or in fact at least having a rear light on all the time ?
As you say a recipe for disaster

There is a law. But they ignore it. Unless part of a council scheme, they are illegal everywhere except on private land, and even then only with the owner's permission.

They are getting endemic around here and it's only a matter of time until there is a fatality sadly...

We have a few around here, quite a lot in the city centre too. One comes past our house regularly, sometimes on the pavement, sometimes on the road. In both cases keeping up with the speed of traffic!! (30mph)
I often think I might sit in the car & wait for him to come passed & just reverse out, but I don't want to damage the car, as no doubt, it'd be my insurance I'd have to claim off!

Darwinism at it's finest... we need more of this and less of the nanny state!

Everything will sort itself out in the end.
